about
"Empty Men is a song about change and wanting to move forward...
"I felt like I was in a 'box', in which I felt there were limits. I was also feeling that the face paints I used to wear on stage for theatrical effect (and 'comfort'/shielding) were becoming more important than the songs. It seemed as though the band - and the act of going to see the band live - had become something akin to going to see a freak show or 'being there just so you can say you were there'... the band and songs had become secondary.
"I knew that once leaving the 'box' - some people wouldn't know what to do with us - were we rock or indie? Were we post-punk, a form of goth or something else entirely?
"I'm so happy though that with all changes and movements for the band, the fanbase has managed to retain people from all the aspects or genres we've touched. Goth, post-punk (revival), indie, rock, and everything in the middle and surrounding. People like music that touches them in whatever way - be it private or publicly... that's what we do. That's all the 'box' we need... and I'm glad we continue to do so - whatever is thrown at us or taken away." (Simon York, Jan 2024)
lyrics
Stick me in a box - where I’ll go, no one knows…
Porcelain hands wave at me in the rain - emissaries of dark love, hurt and pain.
Take me away to a brand new place, crimson rain runs down my face - I’m knowing it will stain.
I’m shaking in the rain.
“Draped in black you’ll show your face”, the empty men will say…
Take me from the box - what I am now, no one knows.
I gaze at you - did I used to know you?
You used to know me but now I’m gone.
Take me away to a brand new place, crimson rain runs down my face - I’m knowing it will stain.
I’m shaking in the rain.
“Draped in black you’ll show your face”, the empty men will say…
I can’t believe anything you say but I let you stay - to keep the peace, I will let you stay.
I’m shaking in the rain.
“Turn around and show your face”, the empty men will say.
Take me away to a brand new place, crimson rain runs down my face - I’m knowing it will stain.
I’m shaking in the rain.
“Turn around and show your face”, the empty men will say…
I can’t believe anything you say but I let you stay - to keep the peace, I will let you stay.
I’m shaking in the rain.
“Turn around, I’ll show my face”, one of the empty men will say.
